The name Alison is first recorded in Scotland in the 12th century and is considered to be a Norman nickname for the name Alice. There are many spellings used today, but the first recordings of the name are spelled Allison, which is a spelling that survives still today. Because of all the different variants of the name, looking at the popularity for the spelling Alison does not give an accurate picture of the popularity of the name, but of this particular spelling of it.

The name Alison as a female given name in the U.S. is still a very popular one although the name is not at its peak popularity. The name is currently the 271st most popular female given name in the U.S. and it has had a slow fall down the chart of the top 1000 most popular female given names since the peak of its popularity in the 1980s.
