ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Alice originally stems back to the Germanic “Adalheidis,” which is a combination of adal meaning “noble” and held meaning “kind” or “sort.” Over time, “Adalheidis” was shortened to “Adalheid,” which the French changed to “Adelaide.” From there, the name found life in the forms “Adaliz,” “Aaliz” and “Aliz.” In England, the name was changed to “Aeleis” and “Alys” before the creation of the modern day “Alice.” Gaelic forms of Alice include “Ailis” and “Ailis.”

In medieval England, Alice was a common name, but was typically spelled Alys. The name was revived in the 19th century after a lengthy period of little use.
