The name Ali is a Muslim name that originates from the Arabic aily or ali meaning “noble,” “sublime,” “elevated,” or “exalted,” which stems from the Arabic aid meaning “to ascend” or “to rise.”

Ali ibn-Abi-Talib of the 7th century – the Prophet Muhammad's cousin and son in law, husband of his daughter Fatima – was the first male convert to Islam. He was the fourth and last legitimate caliph to rule the Muslim world. The Shiite Muslims considered him the first rightful caliph.
