The name Alexa is a shortened form of Alexandra, the female form of Alexander. Alexander comes from the Greek Alexandros, and can be broken down into alexo meaning "to defend" and aner, meaning "man." Since Alexa comes from the same origin, the meaning of Alexa is "defender of man."[1]

Feminine forms of Alexander were not commonly used until the 20th century.[1]

As a surname, Alexa is of Czech or Slovak origin and also derives from the shortened form of Alexander or Alexis.
