[edit] ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Adolf comes from the Old High German Athalwolf, which combines athal, meaning noble, and wolf.
[edit] POPULARITY
Adolf was a popular given name in the German-speaking countries, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and appeared in various Central European countries until the regime of Führer Adolf Hitler. Adolphe, the French version, was fairly common name in France and appeared often in French literature, but has virtually disappeared. Similarly, Adolfo the Italian version of the name has disappeared in Italy. The exception occurs in Spain and Latin American; perhaps because these countries were not subjected to Nazi German occupation, the name has not been stigmatized in the same way. [1]
