[edit] FACTS
- In France, the “A” for Ace is commonly replaced on playing cards with the number “1”
- One of the first consistent uses of the term ace within military aviation began during World War I (1914–18). During this time aviation was unproven and dangerous. The weapons were inaccurate and the pilot had to operate them while flying the plane. A man named Adolphe Pegoud became the first pilot believed to shoot down five German aircraft and was described by French newspapers as “l’as” (French for "ace"). [2]
