ORIGIN AND HISTORY

The name Abraham derives from the Hebrew “Avraham” meaning “father of many” or “father of a multitude.” The Puritans popularized the name in England during the 17th century. Gaelic forms of “Abraham” are “Abracham” and “Abraham.”

In the Bible, Abraham – who was originally called “Abram” – was the first patriarch of the Hebrews and the Arabs. He fathered Ishmael and Isaac with his wife, Sarah.
